CUMC is “Nourishing Our Neighbors” this Sunday, September 12! Following the 11:00 and 11:02 worship services there will be a cookout and Blessing of the Backpacks/Laptops. Neighbors surrounding the church have been invited and together we will worship and fellowship! Please bring a side dish or dessert to share at the cookout and offer a smile and warm hello to all who gather Sunday morning as we seek to offer Christian Hospitality to our neighbors this week who might be worshipping here for the first time.
September 19 Stop Hunger Now (SHN): SHN is a meal packaging program that provides meals for school feeding program in schools and orphanages around the world. Next Sunday, September 19, CUMC will package 40,000 meals during the 9:30 and 11:00 AM worship hours. Plan to come as a family to package meals for one hour and worship another hour. This is a great mission activity for everyone ages 5 – 105. The first packaging hour will be from 9:30 – 10:30. The second shift will run from 11 AM – Noon. Families with children ages 5 and over can come straight to Fellowship Hall to work together. Children under age 5 should be taken to their Sunday School classes.
September 26 Program and Ministry Fair: Displays will be set up in the Narthex for you to browse and see ways you can live out your Christian life at Centreville UMC. Each ministry area will present ways you can grow, serve, and share your faith. While our vision is to Nourish our Neighbors, we also want to focus on our own spiritual growth so we will be equipped to be the people we are called to be in Christ.
Coming in October: Enough Sermon Series and Small Group Study. This study and sermon series is an invitation to rediscover the Bible’s wisdom when nit comes to prudent financial practices,. UPCOMING EVENTS
Cancer Support Group When you or a loved one is diagnosed with cancer, you become part of a network of people from all areas of life who share a common fight. The CUMC Cancer Support Group is one of the resources you have in that fight. The group offers opportunity for fellowship, compassion and networking. It will also help you learn about the resources the church has to help you and your loved ones overcome each challenge. This group meets Sunday Sept 12th from 11:00-12:00 in the Chapel.
VIP - A Place For You! Voices In Praise (VIP), the vocal choir for grades 7 – 12, hold rehearsals on Wednesdays from 7:00-8:00 PM in the choir room. If you are unable to attend a Wednesday rehearsal, join other VIPers on Sundays at 12:15. On Sunday Sept 12th, VIP will meet and then join the after-church potluck.
Bible Buddies Begins Tomorrow! The 3-5 year old Fellowship Group meets in Room 116 on Mondays from 4:00 - 5:00 PM. Children will hear a bible story, create a craft, listen to music and have a small snack. Parent helpers are asked to volunteer on a rotating basis. Registration is available in the classroom. Children’s Choirs Ready to Go! All children’s vocal and handbell choirs will begin on Monday, September 13. CUMC offers vocal choirs for children K – 6. Handbells begin in grade 3. You can find additional information about choirs, their leaders, and schedules in the September issue of the Centrepoint as well as on the church website, www.centreville-umc.org. What a great opportunity for CUMC’s children to learn, create, fellowship, and serve – all through God’s wonderful gift of music!
Chancel Choir – New Singers Welcome! Chancel Choir, CUMC’s adult vocal choir, would love to welcome new singers. The Washington Nationals Baseball Team is holding a Gospel Night at Nationals Park. The Washington Nationals will be playing the Atlanta Braves at 1:05 PM and the concert will begin after the game featuring Earnest Pugh and Shawn McLemore. Centreville UMW's Bazaar will be held Saturday, November 13 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM. United Methodist Women (UMW) will once again be selling White House Ornaments this year. Each ornament will cost $20. UMW use the sales as a fund-raiser for emergency mission opportunities that arise throughout the year. U Feed Others (UFOs): With school starting last Tuesday, the need for UFOs starts again. A UFO is a bag of food, sent home each Friday with elementary school children who have been identified by the school as children who have little or nothing to eat over the weekend. To assemble a UFO, take a gallon zipper-close bag and fill it with 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 suppers, 2 snacks, and a juice box. All food must be non-perishable and must fit in the closed bag. English as a Second Language (ESL) classes began last week with 200 adult students enrolled in the Tuesday and Thursday morning and evening classes. There are still opportunities to be a part of the ESL ministry. The evening program needs a hospitality volunteer – someone to prepare the refreshment table for the evening classroom break. Crosses for Lithuania: CUMC 5th/6th grade students decorated foam crosses that the Lithuania mission team will carry with them this month to place on the Hill of Crosses in Lithuania. You are invited to dedicate a cross “in honor of “ or “in memory of” a special person. Dedication donations will be used to purchase craft materials for children in a residential school for speech impaired in Lithuania. The crosses will be on display in the Narthex and available for inscription between services Sunday, September 12.
Stop Hunger Now Fundraising Dinner will be held tomorrow, Monday, September 13 from 5:00-7:00 PM. Come enjoy a home cooked meal of beef stroganoff, hot dogs noodles, salad, and dessert and a time of fellowship. Meals will also be available for take out. All donations raised from the dinner will go to support the Stop Hunger Now meal packaging program scheduled for next Sunday. The cost of preparing 40,000 meals will be $10,000. To date over $8000 has been raised.
Lithuania Mission Team will depart Tuesday for Siauliai, Lithuania where they will be serving in many ways – there will be construction projects, spiritual programs for women and children’s programs. The women on the team will also participate in the Lithuania Women’s Retreat where all the UM churches in Lithuania will come together for a variety of workshops. The team will return on September 28. Please keep the team and those they go to serve in your prayers.

Camp Highroad Workday is scheduled for Saturday, October 16 from 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM. The work projects will including building a pavilion for the new high ropes course, clearing of brush and various painting projects. All are welcome to participate in this day of fellowship and service. Camp Highroad, located in Middleburg, is a Christian camp owned and operated by the Arlington/Alexandria Districts of the UMC. September Kids With A Mission project is collecting individually wrapped toothbrushes for GRACE Ministries. Sunday School Team Teaching Opportunities for Fall 2010 : There are still needs to provide consistency for the children this year. Teaching teams are formed, but many need alternating teaching teams or assistants to complete the team. Please prayerfully consider teaching one of the fabulous classes to ensure the children have solid Sunday School leadership during the school year. YOUTH ANNOUNCEMENTS
Youth Sunday School, The Odyssey: Sunday Sept 12th at 9:30 AM. There will be doughnuts, a drawing, music, and games. There will be an opportunity to meet Kara Stuebing, CUMC’s Youth Director and to hear all about the great youth activities/programs that are being planned. Bring a friend!
TONIGHT is the Youth Fall Kick-Off! Youth should meet in the ROC at 5:30 PM. There will be a brief parent meeting in The Chapel at 5:30 PM. Youth will compete in a series of Minute to Win it style challenges. Dinner will be served. Please bring a side dish or dessert to share! The evening will end at 8:00 PM.
On Sunday, September 19 there will be a change in youth group times. 7th and 8th grade youth will meet in the youth room from 4:30-6:30 PM. 9th-12th grade youth will meet in the youth room from 6:00-8:00 PM. From 6:00-6:30PM there will be combined refreshments and fellowship time for grades 7-12. Come check it out!
Youth Leadership Meeting: On Sunday, September 19 at 12:00 PM a Youth Leadership recognition and recruiting event will be held in the Youth Room. Adults and youth 10th-12th grade are invited. Lindsay Arnold and Kara Stuebing will be recruiting leadership for youth group, youth events, and confirmation. If you are interested in participating with the youth this year or want to find out more about what is going on in youth group, plan to attend! In addition to being confirmation leaders, youth grades 10-12 will have the opportunity to volunteer with middle school youth on a regular basis. There is a new Covenant group forming for fall! Looking for an intimate setting to come together with other committed Christians for accountability, prayer and Bible study? Grief Recovery: Inadequate recovery from grief can have a lifelong negative effect on your capacity for happiness. The Rev.
